Wolverhampton Wanderers have proven a point after overcoming their first tricky spell of the Premier League season by reeling off back-to-back victories. Nuno Espirito Santo’s men were heralded in some quarters as the best team to have emerged from the Championship in the modern era.
However, the Midlands outfit slipped to a six-game winless run, knocking them down the table after a bright start to the campaign. The pressure was on Wolves to end their struggles after falling to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Cardiff City. Santo’s team responded in the perfect manner with a comeback triumph over Chelsea on home soil before matching their performance on the road by beating Newcastle United at St James’ Park.
Wolves are now considered outsiders to be relegated to the Championship, with odds of 500/1 available in the football betting markets for them to take the plunge to the second tier. They currently sit in the middle of the table and are well on course to surge over the 40-point mark, although a lot can change in football in a short space of time.
However, the Midlands club proved their quality from the off and were able to take points off established teams in the Premier League, including Everton and West Ham United. The strongest signal of their talent has come against the elite teams of the division. They’ve remained unbeaten in their matches against Manchester United and Arsenal on the road and Manchester City at home. There will not be many teams come the end of the campaign that could boast a similar record.
Santo’s team almost allowed their hard work to come undone by losing to the teams that will be in the battle at the bottom. Huddersfield left Molineux with all three points thanks to a brace from Aaron Mooy, while Aron Gunnarsson and Junior Hoilett led Cardiff to a spirited comeback win. A test of Wolves’ character came at home to Chelsea when Ruben Loftus-Cheek put the Blues ahead in the first half. However, on this occasion it was Wolves who had the counterpunch, rallying through Raul Jimenez and Diego Jota to stun Maurizio Sarri’s men.

Fate was on their side against Newcastle as DeAndre Yedlin’s red card turned the contest in their favour in what was a stalemate before the American’s dismissal. Matt Doherty scored a stoppage-time winner to snatch the three points for his team on the road. With a 2-0 victory over Bournemouth, Wolves now have the momentum to enter the hectic festive schedule, and given their performances over the course of the season they should fear no team in the Premier League. Santo’s men are solid enough at the back to stymie even the most potent of attacks, while there’s enough quality in the final third to edge out victories.
Although Jimenez has been solid, the one element that Wanderers have been lacking is a true out-and-out goalscorer. Adding a striker through the middle would give them increased potency in their counter-attacking system against the top sides, with the firepower to blow away the teams in the lower half of the table that has been an issue for Santo’s men. The club are well placed, but the next few months will define whether their season is good or great.
