Sunday, 18th March 2012
Colin Murray reviews the day's Premier League action, featuring Wolverhampton Wanderers v Manchester United at Molineux and Newcastle United v Norwich City at St James' Park. Wolves ended the Red Devils' unbeaten league record last season with a 2-1 home victory in February that also boosted their chances of top-flight survival, and needed a similar result against the champions. The Magpies and Canaries are two sides who have surpassed expectations this term, and Norwich were aiming to record a first win on Tyneside since 1988

Post Match reaction

Wolves 0-5 Manchester United

Terry Connor: "The message to the players and to everyone is: 'Keep believing'. We've got nine more games to play, we've got Norwich next week, Bolton the week after, we're on 22 points, the same as Wigan and QPR. We're not out of it. We are looking forward to trying to make sure next week we are competitive again, to try and take something from the Norwich game and then, to get enough points to get above that dotted line. Has this defeat weakened my resolve? No, I said to the players I'm more determined than ever. Everyone will be writing us off again and we've gone to the bottom of the table but we've been in this situations before."

Sir Alex Ferguson: "I expect it to go to the wire, always hope for the best and expect the worst. There are only nine games left now, it is just a matter of games getting cut off one by one and hopefully we achieve what we want to achieve. What's significant today is it's reduced the goal difference by five goals and that's down to three now and it may make a difference at the end of the season. The finish from Antonio Valencia for the second was fantastic. Antonio is back in the team and his form was fantastic today. He's made one for Danny Welbeck before half-time that killed the match."

Newcastle United 1-0 Norwich City

Alan Pardew: "We needed a win and we had an injury crisis. We weren't firing on all cylinders, had eight players injured and had to grind it out. We have finishers on the pitch and that helps. [Papiss] Cisse showed what he's about today, he could have had a hat-trick. We have now reset our goals and we're going for the Europa League."

Paul Lambert: "The performance was excellent, we had chances to score and I think we had a lot of the ball. Coming here is a tough place to play, we switched off for the goal and have to defend better. We came to a team doing very well with a vibrant crowd and did really well. I thought we had a lot of the ball, passed it really well and looked great at times. I'm disappointed to lose but I'm not disappointed with the performance."
